Stanford Cancer Center - Juicing to Cure Cancer

Juicing Recipes

The best selection of juices comes in nature's own containers: fresh fruits & vegetables.  Fresh juice is loaded with cancer-fighting phytochemicals and vitamins, in a state easily absorbed by the body.
Did you know?:
  • 1 cup of carrot or celery juice provides most of the same nutrients found in 5 cups of those same vegetables chopped up.
To begin juicing, you'll need a juice extractor.
  • For those who don't have one but looking to get one - there are so many versions sold at department stores from $20-$300.
  • High tech features (such as the ability to process whole, uncut fruits) are worth the extra money if you are a frequent juicer.  Otherwise, a basic model will do.
There are 2 types: citrus juicers and juice extractors.
  • Extractors are more versatile; most have a pulp collector that pulls out the fiber (which is why you'll still want to consume whole fruits and vegetables).
  • Look for a machine with components that are dishwasher safe or otherwise easy to clean.
Be sure to read through the information provided with your juicer to become familiar with how your equipment works as well as the recipes included.
Happy Juicing!!
NOTE: These recipes are NOT ok for those on the Low Microbial Diet (LMD)

Ingredients:

Carrot -- Apple Juice
3-4 medium carrots
1 medium Granny Smith apple
Carrot juice is surprisingly sweet and goes well with the tartness of the apples.  When buying Granny Smiths, choose firm ones; they will produce a clearer juice.
Makes 10 ounces = 200 calories, 0g fat, 49g carbs, 4g protein
Spinach -- Cucumber -- Celery Juice
2 cups packed spinach (4 oz)
1 cucumber
1 celery stalk
Because celery isn't overpowering, it allows the spinach and cucumber juices to stand out. Spinach is a good source of calcium, iron, and potassium.
Makes 10 ounces = 139 calories, 1g fat, 35g carbs, 1 g protein
Pineapple -- Blueberry -- Ginger Juice
¼ pineapple
1 cup blueberries
1 piece fresh ginger (1/4-1/2 inch)
Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which have been shown to fight certain types of cancer.  The ginger aids digestion, and sets a South Pacific mood when combined with pineapple.
Makes 12 ounces = 80 calories, 0g fat,16g carbs, 7g protein

The Gerson Therapy (How To Cure Cancer)

The Gerson Therapy is a natural treatment that activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, coffee enemas and natural supplements.

With its whole-body approach to healing, the Gerson Therapy naturally reactivates your body’s magnificent ability to heal itself – with no damaging side effects. This a powerful, natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system to heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases. Dr. Max Gerson developed the Gerson Therapy in the 1930s, initially as a treatment for his own debilitating migraines, and eventually as a treatment for degenerative diseases such as skin tuberculosis, diabetes and, most famously, cancer.
The Gerson Therapy‘s all-encompassing nature sets it apart from most other treatment methods. The Gerson Therapy effectively treats a wide range of different ailments because it restores the body’s incredible ability to heal itself. Rather than treating only the symptoms of a particular disease, the Gerson Therapy treats the causes of most degenerative diseases: toxicity and nutritional deficiency.
An abundance of nutrients from copious amounts of fresh, organic juices are consumed every day, providing your body with a super-dose of enzymes, minerals and nutrients. These substances then break down diseased tissue in the body, while coffee enemas aid in eliminating toxins from the liver.
Throughout our lives our bodies are being filled with a variety of carcinogens and toxic pollutants. These toxins reach us through the air we breathe, the food we eat, the medicines we take and the water we drink. The Gerson Therapy’s intensive detoxification regimen eliminates these toxins from the body, so that true healing can begin.

How the Gerson Therapy Works

The Gerson Therapy regenerates the body to health, supporting each important metabolic requirement by flooding the body with nutrients from about 15- 20 pounds of organically grown fruits and vegetables daily. Most is used to make fresh raw juice, up to one glass every hour, up to 13 times per day. Raw and cooked solid foods are generously consumed. Oxygenation is usually more than doubled, as oxygen deficiency in the blood contributes to many degenerative diseases. The metabolism is also stimulated through the addition of thyroid, potassium and other supplements, and by avoiding heavy animal fats, excess protein, sodium and other toxins.
Degenerative diseases render the body increasingly unable to excrete waste materials adequately, commonly resulting in liver and kidney failure. The Gerson Therapy uses intensive detoxification to eliminate wastes, regenerate the liver, reactivate the immune system and restore the body’s essential defenses – enzyme, mineral and hormone systems. With generous, high-quality nutrition, increased oxygen availability, detoxification, and improved metabolism, the cells – and the body – can regenerate, become healthy and prevent future illness.

Juicing

Fresh pressed juice from raw foods provides the easiest and most effective way of providing high quality nutrition. By juicing, patients can take in the nutrients and enzymes from nearly 15 pounds of produce every day, in a manner that is easy to digest and absorb.
Every day, a typical patient on the Gerson Therapy for cancer consumes up to thirteen glasses of fresh, raw carrot/apple and green-leaf juices. These juices are prepared hourly from fresh, raw, organic fruits and vegetables, using a two-step juicer or a masticating juicer used with a separate hydraulic press.

The Gerson Diet

The Gerson diet is entirely organic and vegetarian. The diet is naturally high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, micro-nutrients, and extremely low in sodium, fats, and proteins. The following is a typical daily diet for a Gerson patient on the full therapy regimen:
  • Thirteen glasses of fresh, raw carrot/apple and green-leaf juices prepared hourly from fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.
  • Three full vegetarian meals, freshly prepared from organically grown fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A typical meal will include salad, cooked vegetables, baked potatoes, Hippocrates soup and juice.
  • Fresh fruit and fresh fruit available at all hours for snacking, in addition to the regular diet.
To learn more about the Gerson diet, follow the link below to read about which foods are permitted and prohibited on the Gerson Therapy:
Colorful Veggies

Supplements

All medications used in connection with the Gerson Therapy are classed as biologicals, materials of organic origin that are supplied in therapeutic amounts.
  • Potassium compound
  • Lugol’s solution
  • Vitamin B-12
  • Thyroid hormone
  • Pancreatic Enzymes

Detoxification

Coffee enemas are the primary method of detoxification of the tissues and blood on the Gerson Therapy. Cancer patients on the Gerson Therapy may take up to 5 coffee enemas per day. Charlotte Gerson explains the necessity of coffee enemas in Healing the Gerson Way:
“The moment a patient is put on the full therapy, the combined effect of the food, the juices and the medication causes the immune system to attack and kill tumor tissue, besides working to flush out accumulated toxins from the body tissues. This great clearing-out procedure carries the risk of overburdening and poisoning the liver—the all-important organ of detoxification, which, in a cancer patient, is bound to be already damaged and debilitated.”
Coffee enemas accomplish this essential task, assisting the liver in eliminating toxic residues from the body for good. The Gerson Therapy also utilizes castor oil to stimulate bile flow and enhance the liver’s ability to filter blood.

Is the Gerson Therapy Right For You?

No treatment works for everyone, every time. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not giving you the facts. We know that when you have been diagnosed with a life-threatening ailment, choosing the best strategy for fighting your illness can be a bewildering task. Everyone claims to have either “the best treatment”, “the fastest cure”, or “the only therapy that works.” In most cases your trusted family physician only has knowledge of conventional treatments, and is either unaware of, or even hostile toward alternative options.
No matter how many opinions you receive on how to treat your disease, you are going to make the final decision on what to do, and you must be comfortable with your decision. Choose a treatment that makes the most sense to you.
Most therapies–conventional or alternative–treat only the individual symptoms while ignoring what is ultimately causing the disease. The reason the Gerson Therapy is effective with so many different ailments is because it restores the body’s incredible ability to heal itself. Rather than treating only the symptoms of a particular disease, the Gerson Therapy treats the cause of the disease itself. Although we feel the Gerson Therapy is the most comprehensive treatment for disease, we don’t claim it will cure everything or everyone.
Caution: Do not start the Gerson Therapy if any of the following conditions apply without referring to Charlotte Gerson’s book, Healing the Gerson Way, or without the supervision of a Gerson doctor:
  • Chemotherapy
  • Diabetes
  • Brain metastases
  • Severe kidney damage and/or if the patient has ever been on dialysis
  • Foreign bodies such as pacemakers, breast implants, steel plates or screws.
Patients must be able to eat, drink and eliminate normally. The Gerson Therapy cannot be administered to organ transplant recipients. See our FAQs to learn more about which conditions are contraindicated for the Gerson Therapy, and which conditions respond well to the Therapy.

Why Smart Meters Produce Higher Bills

Why Smart Meters Produce Higher Bills
By Ted Twietmeyer
7-19-11

Much has been talked about in recent months regarding higher electric bills with new digital meters. In order to understand why this will always be an issue with smart meter technology, we need to look at the principles used by each type of meters.

Oklahoma TV station KOCO report on higher electric bills almost gets it right

Both older electric meters and newer smart meters use basic magnetic principles. However, which of the two principles they utilize to sense the magnetic fields created while you consume power is what actually determines the size of your bill. You will see exactly why your bill will almost always be higher with a new "smart" electric meter and why electric companies are so eager to install them.

We'll first explore the two magnetic principles used in detail while leaving out complex equations.

OLDER ELECTRIC METERS

This type of electric meter works on the eddy current electrical principle. The silver disk you see protruding through the slot with black bars is actually made of aluminum. This disk is the visible part of an electric motor inside the meter known as the rotor. In electrical motors the rotor is made of a magnetic steel alloy which is required for the motor to rotate. Yet in older electric meters the rotor is not magnetic. So how can it work at all?

A simple analogy of the eddy current principle is to think about a calm puddle of water. If you move your finger through the puddle and keep it moving ripples will continue to form. If you hold your finger absolutely still, nothing happens and the puddle of water will return to a mirror-like surface.

Aluminum cannot be magnetized, but is affected by any changing magnetic field passing through it. This characteristic is known as paramagnetism. Like the puddle, as long as the magnetic field is changing eddy currents will continue to form in the aluminum and keep forming temporary magnets.

With older electric meters, all power in your home passes through coils inside the meter. These coils create a magnetic field which penetrates the aluminum disk, creating eddy currents. These eddy currents form tiny temporary magnets in the aluminum disk.
Remember the law of magnets - repelling of like poles and attraction of unlike poles?

Temporary magnets in the aluminum disk formed by eddy currents have enough force to make the disk to rotate. When the disk rotates it turns a series of gears behind the meter's faceplate. These move the hands which show power consumption in kilowatt hours. A 1,000 watt load running for an hour = 1 kilowatt hour.

SMART ELECTRIC METERS

In smart meters there are no moving parts and no aluminum disk to rotate. A simple solid-state sensor works on a principle known as the hall effect. The stronger the AC field created by the total power of all loads in the home, the stronger the AC field the sensor detects. This analog signal is digitized by a convertor and stored in protected memory, is calibrated in kilowatt hours and appears on the meter's display. There is a temperature sensor in smart meters to keep the meters calibrated with temperature changes.

In older electric meters, the power line's 60 cycles/second are averaged together to rotate the disk. The aluminum disk is incapable of detecting each cycle in the 60 cycles/second. In smart electric meters, EACH cycle in the 60 cycles/second power consumed is measured. Nothing is missed.

HIGHER READINGS

So why do smart meters produce higher readings? Is it a plot to help flatten your wallet? In fact it's related to what appliances you have in your home. Mainly, this has to do with electric motors. With furnace fans and compressors used in refrigeration, there is a very high starting current. With a small window or table top electric fan starting current is relatively insignificant. For refrigeration appliances, window air conditioners, furnace blowers or central air conditioning starting current is quite high often several times higher than the running current listed on the nameplate or label.

What can be the reason for higher starting current than running current? In refrigeration appliances, motors must overcome the refrigerant already in the compressor to start rotation. In the case of a forced-air furnace fan or central air-conditioning fan, blower wheels act like large flywheels which must be brought up to speed.

In washing machines, starting current is highest when the spin cycle starts after the wash cycle. It takes many seconds to get the heavy basket with about 30 gallons of water and heavy laundry up to full speed before current consumption drops down to what machine's nameplate shows. A fully loaded basket with water and clothes weighs in well excess of 100lbs. The washer motor is stalled whenever the washer's timer starts it, causing the motor to draw almost 20 amps of power.

Only after any motor reaches full speed will current consumption reduce to the values listed on the nameplate or label.

National electrical codes require high starting-current appliances like washing machines, dryers, furnaces etc... to be connected to their own circuit breaker. This is to insure full power is available for high starting currents. In engineering terms this is called "in-rush current."

Heating elements in electric ranges, water heaters, clothes dryers and baseboard electric heaters all draw heavy current when first turned on. Heating elements are similar to electric motors. A heating element (and filament light bulbs) are almost a dead short when cold but as soon as power is applied these begin to heats up. As a heating element or incandescent lamp gets hotter it draws less current. After a period of time equilibrium is reached producing no further increase in temperature and power consumption is stabilized. Older electric meters respond fast enough to heating elements to add that in-rush current onto the electric bill.

To summarize, high starting current motors often draw very high currents only for a fraction of a second. Due to inertia, older mechanical disk electric meters cannot respond quick enough to register large motor starting current. But smart meters have no problem registering the brief, high power consumption from electric motors as these meters have no moving parts.

Rep. Thiesfeldt Introduces “Smart Meter” Opt-out Bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rep. Thiesfeldt Introduces “Smart Meter” Opt-out Bi
ll
Calls on fellow legislators to support this initiat
ive
Madison, WI –
Today,
Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac) in
troduced
legislation that would allow any Wisconsin citizen
to opt-out of mandated smart meter
installation. A smart meter is a device that is lo
cated on the customer’s premises and can
in real time record and report utility consumption
information typically through wireless
means.
Public and privately-owned utilities are mandating
replacement of analog meters with
smart meters over the objections of some customers
concerned about a variety of issues,
mostly centering on health and privacy. Just yeste
rday, an elderly widow and
grandmother,
Audrey Parker,
in Baraboo had her water shut off due to her refusa
l of
installing a smart meter due to privacy and health
concerns.
“Eight states have seen the wisdom of allowing citi
zens to opt-out of smart meter
installation. This is an issue that crosses party
and ideological lines. There should not be
one person denied essential utility services based
on personal preference of not installing
one—for any reason,” Thiesfeldt stated.
Smart meters can have the ability to collect more t
han just the utility data. When
installed and used with compatible appliances, the
devices can track if a home is
occupied, if the home security system is activated,
when a consumer wakes up, and goes
to bed, water and air temperatures, computer usage,
showering, etc. The list of data is
almost endless. Rationing of utility usage is also
within the scope of capability. All of
this information could be potentially sold to compa
nies desiring such consumer data and
could end up in the hands of law enforcement as wel
l.
“This proposal is essentially a Fourth Amendment bi
ll. When successful, it will push
back future potential intrusions of the rights of c
itizens. People should maintain the right
to control the distribution of personal information
outside their home. The heart of being
a consumer is having a choice—utility customers do
not normally have the luxury of
alternate providers. With smart meter mandates, th
ey are resigned to sacrifice privacy for
essential services,” Thiesfeldt concluded.

A compromise for smart meter resisters

A compromise for smart meter resisters

by CTV - Story: 94976
Jul 12, 2013 / 8:00 am

The B.C. government has decided to let smart meter resisters opt out of the program, but those who do will probably be paying extra.
Energy Minister Bill Bennett said the province is willing to compromise with residents who fear negative health effects from the devices, which transmit usage data back to BC Hydro wirelessly.
But there are costs associated with opting out, and Bennett said it’s not fair to expect smart meter users to foot the bill.
“The 96 per cent of B.C. ratepayers who have taken or are taking a smart meter should not pay the additional cost of the four per cent who don’t want one,” Bennett said.
One option the province is considering is to install smart meters at every home, but turn off the devices’ wireless capability for residents worried about radiation.
The Minister said disabling the devices would cost money, as would turning them back on if new owners move in who want the wireless service.
On top of that, a BC Hydro employee would be forced to drive to the homes every month to read non-wireless meters.
“It’ll be up to the individuals to decide whether they want to pay the cost of having somebody come out and read their meter. They may be the only person in the neighbourhood that requires a manual reading,” Bennett said.
The government said the plans aren’t set in stone, and it’s too soon to say how much the extra cost could be.
There are currently about 60,000 homes without smart meters installed. The more people who decide to continue shunning the devices, the less additional costs the group would pay, Bennett said.
BC Hydro insists the meters are safer than talking on a cell phone; officials say the radio frequency output of a smart meter over 20 years is roughly the equivalent of a 30-minute phone call.
But Bennett said the government isn’t interested in pressuring residents who believe strongly that the devices could harm them or their families.
“It’s not our intention to offend people or bully people. There are people who have beliefs that I don’t necessarily agree with,” he said. “So we’re going to respect that, but they don’t get that exception without some cost.”

Check Frequently Asked Questions for detailed information.
Utilities across the country are installing so-called ‘smart’ meters.  As a result, bills are skyrocketing, health effects and safety violations are being reported, and privacy in our homes is being violated. Do we really need wireless smart meters?
Decide for yourself:
Do you want an accurate, reasonably priced utility bill? Utility customers have noticed huge increases in their bill after a ‘smart’ meter is installed–in some cases hundreds of dollars more than usual.  Utilities claim the meters are accurate, but unexplained over-billing has featured in many negative reports, all around the US. Read more.
Do you value your health, and the health of your family and friends? Just as we’re learning that cell phones cause brain tumors, why are we installing the same technology on everyone’s homes, often with no right to opt out?  Thousands of people have complained of tinnitus, headaches, nausea, sleeplessness, heart arrhythmia, and other symptoms after a ‘smart’ meter was installed.  Wireless technology is a public health hazard.  Smart meters can violate already high FCC limits on human exposure to microwave radiation, and are being installed even as people are developing “electro-sensitivity”.  There are also reports of ‘smart’ meter interference with pacemakers and other implants. Read more.
Do you value civil liberties and the right to privacy? When a ‘smart’ meter is installed, your utility has access to a treasure trove of information about your electricity usage, potentially compromising your privacy. Depending on the regulatory protections–and enforcement of those rules–in your state, they will be able to sell this information to a series of corporations and the government. Read the interview with the Electronic Frontier Foundation about how ‘smart’ meters violate privacy. Read how the ACLU in Vermont and the ACLU in Hawaii have both condemned the lack of consumer privacy protection.
Do you care about wildlife and cutting carbon emissions? Smart meters do not result in energy savings, according to Reuters.  They may even increase energy consumption.  There is also emerging evidence that wireless, non-ionizing radiation (from cell phones, wifi, and ‘smart’ meters) harms wildlife and damages trees. There have been direct reports of how smart meters affect vital bee populations.
Are you concerned about job losses in this anemic economy? PG&E claims that they are retaining 80% of their meter readers. What they don’t tell you is that several years back, they transitioned their meter readers from full time to temporary so the job loss would not appear so drastic. Utilities look upon smart meters as an easy way to boost profits by cutting jobs. We cannot afford to lose thousands of jobs in this economy.
Are you in favor of fire regulations that put the safety of residents first? A number of electrical fires have been caused by ‘smart’ meters.  Like all other smart meters, PG&E’s meters are not UL certified, as is required by electrical code for all electric appliances within the home.  Smart meters are potential ignition sources and remove utility personnel from neighborhoods.  If meter readers had been present in San Bruno, would the gas leak have been detected?  Whistleblowers have alleged unsafe installations. Here is another whistleblower’s story in Alabama.
Are you alarmed about the decline of our democracy and informed decision-making? The conversion to smart meters is one of the largest technology rollouts in history, and yet virtually no public consultation with ratepayers or local governments was carried out in advance.  The CA Public Utilities Commission, an appointed (not elected) body who are charged with regulating utility companies, ignored popular local opposition for years–though finally and belatedly producing an opt-out in early 2012 that costs PG&E customers hundreds of dollars just to avoid a recognized possible carcinogen. In the rest of CA other utilities continues to install smart meters (Feb 2012).
SPEAK OUT!  Spread the word to friends and neighbors, put a NO SMART METERS sign in your front yard, demand the regulators and your local government TAKE ACTION, REFUSE installation, and DEMAND REMOVAL!

As of June 2012, more than 56 cities and counties in CA have demanded a moratorium.  Thirteen have even criminalized smart meters.  More ways to take action here.

Debate Over California Smart Meters Continues

The installation of wireless “smart meters” for the monitoring of household gas, water, and electricity consumption continues to draw fire from activist groups in California. A recent salvo against the practice was lobbed by a consulting firm’s study alleging electromagnetic frequencies emitted by the meters exceed Federal Communications Commission safety limits.
Smart meters enable two-way communication between households and utility companies. The meters report utility consumption every hour, enabling the utility company to measure household use, identify peak-use periods, and set pricing accordingly.
California regulators approved the use of smart meters in 2006.  Nations such as Italy, Canada, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom have also implemented smart meter programs.
‘Documented Biological Impacts’
A study released January 1, 2011, by the environmental consulting firm Sage and Associates asserts wireless smart meters being installed by Pacific Gas & Electric and other utilities in California are likely to violate FCC safety limits.
“The risk to the public is immense,” said Joshua Hart, director of Stop Smart Meters, a statewide California activist group. “We are essentially running a giant experiment on a largely unaware population. The bottom line is that the limits that the Federal Communications Commission sets for wireless technology is [sic] many orders of magnitude too high,” he said.
“People are getting hurt by exposure to wireless radiation,” Hart continued. “There is no question about that. There are documented biological impacts from levels of microwaves far below what the smart meter emits. We’re talking DNA breaks, pathological leakage of the blood-brain barrier, and cancer,” he said.

‘Well-Below FCC Limits’
Dr. Rob Kavet, a scientist at the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, challenges Hart’s assertions as scientifically inaccurate. Radio frequency safety standards and guidelines—including the radio-frequency exposure rule published by the FCC—are based on comprehensive reviews of the scientific literature, he said.
“This literature includes research conducted both above and below thresholds of established effects. These effects result from the heating of tissue, and are often referred to as thermal effects.”
Kavet said the consensus of the vast majority of scientific reviews has not identified biological or health effects that could be attributed to non-thermal mechanisms.
Kavet cited a peer-reviewed study published by EPRI in November 2010 which indicated exposures from smart meters are well below FCC limits. In addition, he said, the study establishes the FCC’s limits already “incorporate a 50-fold safety factor from the threshold for established effects.”

The New Fight Against SMART Meters

Texas House erupts in heated debate over ‘smart meters’ for electricity Austin Bureau

Published: 20 March 2013 10:17 PM
Updated: 20 March 2013 10:46 PM
AUSTIN — Health and privacy worries about advanced electric meters surfaced in House debate Wednesday, but most lawmakers rejected impassioned arguments that “smart meters” pose a danger.
“It’s important to a lot of people that have received meters that they didn’t want,” said the libertarian-leaning Rep. David Simpson, R-Longview. “We don’t know the long-term health effects of these meters.”
The House overwhelmingly rejected Simpson’s amendment to Public Utility Commission sunset legislation, but only after heated debate and raised voices. House members gave preliminary approval to the overall sunset bill, 139-6, to keep the commission operating for 10 more years.
Much of the debate centered on an emergency cease-and-desist power, which watchdog groups say is an important consumer protection tool, and the advanced meters. The Legislature encouraged the devices several years ago. They are being installed by some utilities across Texas.
A smart meter records electricity consumption in time intervals, typically every 15 minutes, and sends the information to the electric utility. Supporters say they allow consumers to more accurately track electricity usage. The meters can also report a power outage.
“I support better technology,” Simpson said. But he contended that consumers should be able to choose it rather than be required to have it.
Under his proposal, Texans could refuse installation of a smart meter or have one that’s already present removed and replaced with a conventional meter.
Rep. Byron Cook, the Corsicana Republican who is author of the sunset bill, opposed Simpson’s amendment. He repeatedly pointed out that the Public Utility Commission is developing rules so consumers can choose not to have a smart meter.
Opponents say a utility company or another party with access to the customer information could invade privacy and see which electricity-consuming activities are going on inside the home.
And Simpson continually brought up the radio frequency signals emitted by the meters. He suggested that pacemakers could be affected and that the meters may be connected to autism.
Round Rock Republican Rep. Larry Gonzales, who has a son with autism, challenged Simpson and demanded proof. Simpson backed off and acknowledged he wasn’t an expert on the disorder.
But “we didn’t know a whole lot about smoking for many years,” Simpson added.
Rep. Larry Phillips, R-Sherman, said some worries about smart meters are unfounded. But raising the issue lets commission officials know that it’s important to many Texans, he said.
Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, argued that the meters help people become smarter about electric usage. Those who don’t want them can get “completely off the grid,” he said.
Earlier the House upheld a provision that gives the utility commission emergency cease-and-desist authority over the electric industry if the reliability of the electric grid is in jeopardy or the public is endangered.
“This is about vulnerable Texans that we need to protect,” said Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas.
Throughout the debate, legislators said an unnamed “outside influence” wanted the proposed authority eliminated. An article on the website of the influential conservative group Empower Texas argued against the emergency power. It said the group would rate legislators positively for eliminating it.
